A viral conjunctivitis is caused by
an respiratory virus called adenovous virus ,It usually clears up within few
day but can take week and if left
untreated it can be chronic., conjunctivitis caused by a viral infection is
characterized by the following symptoms:

Redness in the white of the eye.
·
A lot of tearing
·
Swollen area infront of the eyelids
·
A colourless discharge from the eye
·
Swellings of the eyelids
·
Itching or burning sensations in the eye
lids
Viral
pinkeye is usually triggered by low body immune system, using contact loss or
one eye vision. This type of pinkeye is not usually treated but the symptom
will go away in few days. In some rare cases it can be treated with antiviral especially
if the infection is caused by herpes virus.
While
a bacterial pinkeye is caused by a bacteria, streptococcus, haemophilus. Staphylococcus, corynebacterium,
, pseudomonas, and moraxella species.

A bacterial pinkeye is characterized by the following symptoms

A yellow, green or white mucous
discharge from the eye

Light sensitivity
·
Tearing
·
Intolerance to contact lens
·
Fluctuations and decreased vision
·
, itchy or swollen eye
Bacterial
pinkeye may takes longer to go, but it is treated with antibiotics, they are usually
spread due to poor hygiene, poor contact lens hygiene, contaminated cosmetics
etc,
Diseases
such as dry eye, blepharitis, anatomic abnormalities at the acular surface and
lids, ocular foreign bodies etc
The major difference between viral and
bacterial pinkeye; bacterial are caused by bacteria, they last longer, their
symptoms is more severe and can be treated with antibiotics.
